LWANGWA, APOSTOLIC VICARIATE OF. - In the north-eastern part of Northern Rhodesia, entrusted to the Society of Missionaries of Africa (White Fathers). It derives from the apostolic vicariates of Bangweulu and Nyassa, from which on 23 May 1933 a portion of territory was detached and erected as a sui iuris mission under the name of L., which on 1 July 1927, with modified boundaries, was elevated to an apostolic vicariate and on 8 March 1951 changed its name to that of Abercorn.

It has an area of 107,653 sq km, with 197,891 inhabitants, of whom 39,153 are Catholics. It has 9 parishes, served by 1 diocesan priest and 28 regulars, assisted by 1 female religious community; 148 schools (of which 1 normal school) and 10 works of charity and welfare, with several associations of Catholic Action (Ann. Pont., 1951, p. 679).
