LWANGWA, APOSTOLIC VICARIATE OF. — In the north-eastern part of Northern Rhodesia, entrusted to the Society of Missionaries of Africa (White Fathers). It derives from the Apostolic Vicariates of Bangueloo and Nyassa, from which on 23 May 1933 a portion of territory was detached and erected as a mission under the name of L., which on 10 July 1927, with modified boundaries, was elevated to an Apostolic Vicariate and on 8 March 1951 changed its name to Abercorn.
It has an area of 107,653 sq. km., with 197,891 inhabitants, of whom 39,153 are Catholics. It comprises 9 parishes, served by 1 diocesan priest and 28 regular priests, assisted by female religious communities; 148 schools (of which 1 normal school) and 10 charitable and welfare institutions, with several associations of Catholic Action (Ann. Pont., 1951, p. 679).
