LUSAKA, APOSTOLIC VICARIATE OF. - In the south-eastern part of Northern Rhodesia, entrusted to the Society of Jesus. It derives from the apostolic prefecture of the Zambezi (today the vicariate of Salisbury), from which it was detached and erected as the prefecture of Broken Hill on 14 July 1927; it took its present name on 13 June 1946 and was elevated to an apostolic vicariate on 14 July 1950.

It has an area of approximately 160,000 sq km with 450,000 inhabitants, of whom 27,500 are Catholics. It has 15 churches and 55 stations, served by 1 diocesan priest and 28 religious, assisted by 7 male and 7 female religious communities. It has 241 schools (of which 9 are vocational and 1 is a teacher-training school), 6 works of charity and welfare (among them 1 hospital and 1 orphanage). There are also confraternities and associations of Catholic Action (Ann. Pont., 1951, p. 679).
