ORMULUM, THE. - È un lungo poema didattico inglese, composto nella prima metà del sec. XIII dal monaco agostiniano Orm (donde il titolo).

About 20,000 verses remain. It consists of a series of minute paraphrases of the Gospels according to the order in which they appear in the Roman Missal throughout the liturgical year. The work, which lacks poetic qualities, was probably intended for oral recitation, and the author therefore adopted a special orthography (with distinction of short and long syllables, etc.) that makes it a valuable document for the linguist who seeks to reconstruct, even in its metrical and phonetic data, the English of the time.
