HOSPITALLERS OF ST. JOHN OF GOD (FATEBENEFRATELLI) - The complex of the Hospitals of the Tiber Island and the main seat of the Order - Rome.
on which the hospitals depended. Also belonging to the category of hospitals are the clinics of university medical faculties; these, however, are governed by particular norms contained in the Consolidated Text of 21 Aug. 1933, no. 1592, art. 49, and the General University Regulation of 6 Apr. 1924, no. 674, art. 132. The characteristic element of these medico-university institutions is given less by the charitable purpose than by the scientific and didactic one.
Psychiatric hospitals, or "asylums," present particular characteristics; they have the function of sheltering and treating the mentally ill. They are distinguished from ordinary hospitals by the fact that they combine the function of public security with that of assistance: the insane are not only sheltered and treated, but also placed in a position where they can do harm neither to themselves nor to others.
Asylums can be distinguished into public and private. The public ones are administered for the most part by the provinces. The regulation of asylums, contained in the Law of 14 Feb. 1904, no. 56, and in the related Implementing Regulation of 16 Aug. 1909, no. 615, is uniformly laid down for all asylums, public and private.
