PANCHARTA. - Name by which, in the medieval period, are designated the privileges issued by sovereign authority to confirm to churches or monasteries all previous concessions, especially when the earlier documents had been dispersed or destroyed.

At the abbey of St-Martin of Tours the term p. is attested in the meaning of "cartulary" or "liber privilegiorum." Limited to Frankish territory, and in conjunction with the use of the Christian era in the French style (beginning of the year on Easter day), is the name of p. paschalis given to the tablet containing the chronological indications for the new year that was hung on the paschal candle during the function of Holy Saturday. More widespread, however, in the Carolingian period, is the term p. with the value of appennes (v.).
