It covers an area of 12,000 sq. km. with a population of 450,000, of whom 420,000 are Catholics, and comprises 128 parishes (Ann. Pont., 1952, p. 310). At present no further statistical data are available, since the entire hierarchy has been suppressed.
The diocese was erected by Pius XI with the apostolic constitution *Lituanorum gente* of 4 April 1926, carved Kaunas (v.), of which it is a suffragan.
