PANEVÉZYS, DIOCESE of. — City and diocese in Lithuania, suffragan of the diocese of Kaunas.
It has an area of 12,000 sq. km., with a population of 450,000 inhabitants, of whom 420,000 are Catholics, and it had 128 parishes (Ann. Pont., 1952, p. 310). At present no further statistical data are available, since the entire hierarchy has been suppressed.
The diocese was erected by Pius XI through the apostolic constitution Lituanorum gente of 4 April 1926, by Kaunas (v.), of which it is a suffragan.
