PANEBIANCO, Antonio Maria (secular name: Niccolò), Cardinal. - B. at Terranova di Sicilia on 23 Aug. 1808, d. at Rome on 21 Nov. 1885.

Having entered the Order of the Conventuals at barely fifteen years of age, he was professor of theology in the college of the Order and in the Seminary of Catania; in 1853, provincial of Sicily. Pius IX, having summoned him to Rome, sent him to Transylvania, together with the nuncio in Vienna, Msgr. De Luca, to settle certain questions that had arisen with the Austrian government concerning the mixed marriages of that distant province of the Habsburg Empire; Fr. P. carried the difficult mission through to completion, with full satisfaction of both parties.

Created on 27 Sept. 1861 cardinal priest of S. Girolamo degli Schiavoni (from which title he passed shortly thereafter to that of the SS. XII Apostoli, a church officiated by the Fathers of his Order), he refused to be named camerlengo of the Holy Roman Church, as also later to opt for a suburbicarian diocese: the Pontiff had to use all his authority to make him accept the prefecture of the Congregation of Indulgences and Relics and, in 1876, the office of major penitentiary. With enthusiasm he agreed instead to be included in the commission charged with preparing the work of the Vatican Council and carried out in that field a truly precious action.
