CARNEVALI, GIOVANNI - Self-portrait - Florence, Uffizi Gallery.
CARNEVALI, Giovanni, called Il Piccio. - Painter, b. at Montegrino near Luino on 29 Sept. 1806, d. at Caltaro on the Po on 10 July 1873.
One of his early works, Deposition from the Cross (1820), won acclaim. The subsequent ones, Death of Abel, Holy Family, Education of the Virgin (1826) and Hagar in the Desert (1820), show him almost immune to the Neoclassical rhetoric then prevailing and rather a follower of the Lombard and Emilian tradition. His multifaceted pictorial output, and in particular the series of portraits, in which he blends sober Lombard grace with a sound constructive vigor of his own, show that « he understood color as richness and vibration of similar tones, persisting through the lights, the shadows and the half-tones ».
