PETER OF HONESTIS (de Honestis), called the Sinner. - Founder and first prior of the Canons Regular of S. Maria in Porto at Ravenna. Few but reliable pieces of information about P. are found in the ancient parchments preserved in the Biblioteca Classense in Ravenna. On 30 July 1106 P. resided near the church, situated on the Island of Corizo in the lagoon territory between Ravenna and the sea.

In the following years he is remembered as rector, who attended to the work of restoring the church and building a new cloister adjacent to it. In 1114 P., with some companions, was living in this cloister in a perfect common canonical life. An act of the notary Ugo is signed by P. in his capacity as prior of S. Maria in Porto. He is the author of the statutes, fixed by agreement with his canons and approved as the Regola portuense by Paschal II on 22 Dec. 1116. In the petition for approval P. calls himself Peccatore. Perhaps because of this title, which he attributed to himself out of humility, he was confused with Pier Damiano during the 14th-17th centuries and was even called "blessed" by them. Died between 10 Sept. 1118 and 6 Apr. 1119.

Nicola Widloecher he presided, at Vincennes, over an assembly of 29 masters of the University of Paris convoked by the King to obtain their opinion concerning the private opinion of John XXIII on the deferral of the beatific vision, and in 1335 he assisted Benedict XII in the preparatory studies for the bull Benedictus Deus (29 Jan. 1336) with which the Pope decided the question.
