ISAIA d'ESTE. - Lateran regular canon, died in the early years of the sixteenth century, also called "of Padua," according to the custom of the Lateranenses of preferring the name of the chief town to that of origin. He was among the most learned and capable men of the Congregation during the second half of the 15th century. For many years he held governance in the principal canonries, among them those of Vicenza, Padua, Vercelli and Venice. On various occasions he was elected visitor and procurator general.

In 1480 at Vicenza he wrote a Latin commentary on the Song of Songs. Some years later, urged by the Canonesses of St. Thomas of Vicenza and by other pious Venetian women, he composed another for them in the vernacular with an allegorical-ascetic interpretation. It is the first commentary on the Song known to have been written in the Italian language, printed at Venice on 9 Nov. 1504.
