ISAIA d'ESTE. - Lateran Regular Canon, d. in the early years of the sixteenth century, also called «di Padova», in accordance with the Lateran Canons’ custom of preferring the name of the chief city to that of the place of origin. He was among the most learned and capable men of the Congregation during the second half of the fifteenth century. For many years he governed the principal canonries, including those of Vicenza, Padova, Vercelli, and Venezia. On several occasions he was elected visitor and procurator general.
In 1480 he wrote at Vicenza a Latin commentary on the Cantico dei Cantici. Some years later, at the urging of the Canonesses of s. Tommaso in Vicenza and of other devout Venetian women, he composed another for them in the vernacular, with an allegorical-ascetical interpretation. It is the first commentary on the Cantico known to have been written in the Italian language, printed in Venezia on 9 Nov. 1504.
