PIETRO di GAND. - Missionary, born c. 1480 near Ghent, died in Mexico on 20 April 1572. Of the van der Müre family, he was related to Charles V (perhaps his natural brother). He probably studied at Louvain and spent some time at court, then entered the Franciscan Order and never wished to be ordained a priest.
