With Giovanni de Tecto he took part in 1524 in Cortés's expedition to Honduras and then returned to Mexico City, where he spent his whole life, above all in the education of the young, establishing schools and teaching, besides Christian doctrine, the arts, music, and work, in order to bring about the conversion of their relatives and to destroy the remnants of idolatry. Mendieta, a historian of slightly later date, says that he built more than 100 churches or chapels, among them the church of St. Francis in Mexico. He effectively protected the Indians before Charles V, whence he met with various difficulties and hostility on the part of the Spaniards. Under a false accusation, toward the end of his life he was sent into exile to Tlaxcala, from where he soon returned, welcomed triumphantly by the Indians. He died amid the lamentation of the Indians after 50 years of apostolate. Five letters of his survive.
