PETER REGALATUS, saint. — Born in Valladolid in 1390, of a distinguished family, died in the convent of La Aguilera on May 13, 1458.
He entered the Franciscan Order at the age of 13. While the Blessed Peter of Villacreces, promoter of the Observance in Spain, was traveling to La Aguilera, in the diocese of Osma, to establish an eremitical community there, he passed through Valladolid and found in Peter Regalatus one of his first disciples and an indefatigable collaborator in introducing the Observance into Spain. Villacreces entrusted him with the governance of La Aguilera while he himself continued to establish new foundations. In 1422, upon Villacreces' death, Regalatus took charge of consolidating and spreading the Observance. He distinguished himself by his devotion to evangelical poverty and his charity toward the poor, which was also marked by the gift of miracles. His cult was confirmed in 1683 and he was solemnly canonized by Benedict XIV in 1746. His feast is celebrated on May 13.
