PINY, ALEXANDRE. - Dominican mystical writer, b. at Allos (Provence) on 25 February 1640, d. at Paris on 20 January 1709. He took the religious habit at Draguignan. He taught at Marseille and at Aix, where he was
regent of studies (1671-75). He then moved to Paris, first to the convent of S. Giacomo, then to that of the S.ma Annunziata, where he died.
He left ascetical-mystical works, widely circulated down to the present day, abandonment (v.): Etat du pur amour (3rd ed., Lyons 1682, Bordeaux 1683); La clef du pur amour (Lyons 1681, 1682, 1683); Le plus parfait (Paris 1683, frequently reprinted). Also worthy of mention are the scholastic works: Cursus philosophicus thomisticus... (5 vols., Lyons 1670) and Summae Angelicae s. Thomae Aquinatis compendium resolutorium... (4 vols., ibid. 1680-81).
