PULATI, DIOCESE OF. — It is situated in the interior of northern Albania, a suffragan of Shkodër. From 1877 to 1932 it was subject to the archdiocese of Bar. When this was destroyed, Antivari became the metropolitan see (1932 or 1934), of which Pulati was a suffragan until 1887, when it passed under Shkodër.
From 1340 to 1520, in fact, there existed two dioceses of Pulati (Polata maior and minor). The bishops of the latter generally bore the title of Episcopi Sobrienses, from the village of Sosi, seat of the ordinary. By decree of 11 February, the bishop of Sappa was entrusted with the interim administration of the diocese. At that time the Scalabrini missionaries began their work, especially in the districts of Gashi and Krasniqe, which had passed to Islam under Turkish persecution. Given the small number of Catholics in Pulati, on 9 May 1667 it was changed to an apostolic vicariate, but on 16 September 1697, under the Franciscan Pietro Karagić, it was again elevated to a diocese.
