PUJATI, GIUSEPPE MARIA. – Jansenist, born in Polcenigo on 3 August 1733, died in Venice on 5 February 1824. Having entered the Somaschi at a young age, in 1748 he taught literature at the Order’s College in Brescia and theology at the Collegio Clementino in Rome. As a follower of Augustinianism, he took part in the theological discussions of the time. To devote himself to the study of Sacred Scripture, the Fathers, and ecclesiastical History, in which he was particularly well versed, he became a Benedictine at Montecassino in 1772.
His friends drew him back into the controversy, first at Bergamo, then at the University of Padua, where from the Senate ve-

Church (n.p. 1778); Examination of an article by Monsieur de la Lande on the Freemasons and of a new apology for them (Venice 1787). These works, with one exception, escaped condemnation, but his close friendship with the Jansenists (e.g., Clément, De Ricci, Tamburini, De Vecchi) and the favor he showed toward the ideas proper to that movement did not save him from the accusation of heresy, even though he intended to die in the most openly professed and lived faith.
