SAINT-AMOUR, LOUIE-GORIS de. - Jansenist, b. in Paris on 27 Oct. 1619, d. at St-Denis on 14 Nov. 1687. Professor and later rector of the Sorbonne, known for his anti-Jesuit polemics and for the defense of the five propositions extracted from Jansenius's Augustinus and condemned by the Holy See.
One of his publications is famous: Journal de m. L.-G. de St-A., docteur de Sorbonne, de ce qui s'est fait à Rome, dans l'affaire des cinq propositions (2 vols., Holland 1662; placed on the Index, decr. 28 March 1664); but of this Journal it is believed that only the annotations are his and that the drafting is for the most part attributable to Antoine Arnauld and Isaac Le Maître de Sacy. He had in fact been commissioned to go to Rome to obtain a revision of the condemnation of the five propositions by Innocent X; but he was unsuccessful. He also published: Mémoires apologétiques pour l'Université de Paris contre l'entreprise de quelques Hibernois (s. l. 1651). The composition of the « chamillards » is also attributed to him. A friend of Arnauld, whose condemnation he refused to subscribe to, he was excluded from the Sorbonne and then condemned as well by decree of 28 May 1664. He favored the Jansenist movement in its first emergence more through the authority that derived from his position as rector of the University of Paris than through the intrinsic value of his intellectual contribution.
