RALLIS, GEORGIO ALESSANDRO. — Political jurist, born in Constantinople in 1804. He pursued his advanced studies in Vienna and Paris, where he also served as a rhetoric teacher. Upon returning to Greece, he was entrusted by his government with several political missions in Thebes and Athens.
At the University of Athens, he served twice as rector (1838, 1868) and held the chair of law. He also presided over various government ministries, including Justice (1841, 1848, 1857), Economy (1841), and Foreign Affairs (1848). With his appointment as director of the Areopagus (1850), he resumed his legal teaching career, which he continued, with some interruptions, until his death in 1883 in Austria.
He authored numerous legal works and contributed to the establishment of several legal bodies in Greece during his tenure as Minister of Justice. Among his notable publications are the *Enchiridion of Roman Law* (Athens, 1836), a work from his early years, and his more mature treatise on the draft law on vagrancy (ibid., 1878–79). In collaboration with Potlis M., he published *Greek Codes* (in Greek, ibid., 1844), which went through many subsequent editions, and their joint work, *Ordinatio Sacrorum Canonum Ecclesiae Orthodoxae Orientalis* (in Greek, ibid., 1852–56), remains a classic.
