REMLING, FRANZ XAVER

REMLING, FRANZ XAVER. - Priest, archivist, and historian, b. at Edenkoben (Palatinate) on 10 July 1803, d. there on 28 June 1873.

Episcopal archivist, then parish priest, from 1852 canon at Speyer, official historiographer of the diocese and member of the Munich Academy, he published a series of accurate and well-documented historical works. The principal ones are: Die Geschichte der Bischöfer zu Speier (2 vols., Mainz 1852-54), followed, as an Urkundenbuch (down to 1803), by two further volumes (ibid. 1852-53); and, as a continuation: Neuere Geschichte der Bischöfe zu Speier mit Urkundenbuch (2 vols., Speyer 1867); Nikolaus von Weis; Bischof von Speier im Leben und Wirken (2 vols., ibid. 1871); Karl von Geissel, Bischof von Speier und Erzbischof von Köln sammt Urkundenbuch (ibid. 1873). He also dealt with the history of abbeys: Urkundliche Geschichte der ehemaligen Klöster und Abteien [69 in number] in Rheinbälern (2 vols., Neustadt 1836); Denkschrift über das Reformationswerk in der Pfalz (down to 1592; Mannheim 1847); Die Rheinpfalz in der Revolutionszeit von 1872-98 (ibid. 1865; 2nd ed., ibid. 1867). With J. M. Frey he published: Urkundenbuch des Kloster Otterberg in den Rheinpfalz (ibid. 1845).
