GEISSEL, JOHANNES von. - Cardinal, b. 5 Feb. 1796 at Gimmeldingen (Palatinate), d. 18 Sept. 1864 at Cologne. He studied at the Seminary of Mainz, then under the guidance of L. B. Liebermann. Ordainedpriest in 1818, he taught at the royal lyceum of Speyer and was a canon of the cathedral, until King Louis I of Bavaria proposed him as bishop of Speyer and he was preconized by Gregory XVI on 20 May 1837.
Through his capacity for governance he won over the minds of the sovereign and of the diocesans and the respect of the Catholic population. Following the imprisonment of the Archbishop of Cologne, Droste-Vischering, it became necessary to appointment of a coadjutor became necessary; the choice of the Holy See and of the king of Prussia fell on G., who, coadjutor from 1842 and then archbishop from 1846, governed that diocese until his death. He resolutely continued the struggle against the Hermesian doctrines taught at the University of Bonn and convoked in 1848 an episcopal conference at Würzburg which marks a fixed point in the history of German Catholicism in the nineteenth century. In the Consistory of 30 Sept. 1850 Pius IX created G. cardinal.
