GELASIUS OF CAESAREA. - Son of a sister of Cyril of Jerusalem, born ca. 335-36, died ca. 404-405. From ca. 365-66 he was bishop of Caesarea. Under the emperor Valens he had to yield his see to the Arian Euzoius.

In 379 he returned to Caesarea. St. Jerome mentioned him in De viris illustribus. Fragments of his writings have been preserved in Theodoret, Leontius of Byzantium, Severus of Antioch and in the Doctrina Patrum. He was the author of an Institutio practica, probably a collection of catechetical discourses in the style of the work of his 20 Cyril of Jerusalem. An Expositio symboli formed part of this collection of at least 20 treatises. That he was the true author of the continuation of Eusebius' Historia ecclesiastica, attributed to Rufinus, cannot be proved. It appears that G. enlarged Eusebius' work and translated Rufinus' continuation into Greek. Photius also knew of a writing by him against the Arians ("anomoeans").
