FILONE di CARPASIA. - Of Carpasium, in Cyprus, or of Carpatino, an island between Crete and Rhodes, he lived in the first half of the fifth century. He was a bishop and the author of a commentary on the Canticum Canticorum.
Cassiodoro had in the Vivarium a manuscript which erroneously attributed the commentary to Epifanio di Cipro (Cassiodoro, Institutiones, edited by B. A. B. Bly-nors, Oxford 1937, p. 24,9; cf. P. Courcelle, Les Lettres grecques en Occident, Paris 1943, pp. 338 and 364-67). The Greek fragments of this commentary in PG 40, 27-154, are probably an excerpt from the original commentary. Fragments of the commentary also occur in the Catena of Procopio on the Canticum, in the Topography of Cosma Indicioplatiste, and in the Expositio in Cani canticorum of Ps. Eusebio (in Menesli opera, VIII, Florence 1746). A thorough study, especially of the sources, is lacking.
