PHILO OF CARPASIA. - From Carpasium, in Cyprus, or from Carpathos, an island between Crete and Rhodes, he lived in the first half of the 5th century. He was a bishop, author of a commentary on the Canticle of Canticles.

Cassiodorus had in the Vivarium a manuscript that erroneously attributed the commentary to Epiphanius of Cyprus (Cassiodorus, Institutiones, edited by B. A. B. Blynors, Oxford 1937, p. 24,9; cf. P. Courcelle, Les Lettres grecques en Occident, Paris 1943, pp. 338 and 364-67). The Greek fragments of this commentary in PG 40, 27-154, are probably an extract from the original commentary. Fragments of the commentary also in the Catena of Procopius on the Canticle, in the Topography of Cosmas Indicopleustes and in the Expositio in Cantica canticorum of Ps. Eusebius (in Menesli opera, VIII, Florence 1746). A thorough study, especially on the sources, is lacking.
