REUTER, JOHANN. - Jesuit, moralist, b. in Luxembourg on 13 Oct. 1680, d. in Trier on 21 Jan. 1761.

He taught successively letters, philosophy, and dogmatics; then, for 8 years, moral theology at the University of Trier, of which he was also rector. The work that made him useful and sought after down to our own days is: Confessarius rite institutus (Cologne 1750), repeatedly published and translated into various languages. The recent editions were reworked and brought up to date in accordance with the needs and novelties of the times, first by Fr. J. Müllendorf (Freiburg im Br. 1906), who had already translated it with great success into German (Regensburg 1890; 3rd ed. 1901), then by Fr. A. Lehmkuhl (Freiburg im Br. 1905, 2nd ed. ibid. 1910; 3rd ed. revised in accordance with the CIC by Fr. J. B. Umberg, ibid. 1919). R. also published: Theologia moralis quadrifuritas (4 vols., Cologne 1750, with subsequent editions). In both works he proves himself a serious author, moderate in doctrine, profound and orderly.
