REUTER, Johann. - Jesuit, moralist, b. at Luxembourg on 13 Oct. 1680, d. at Trier on 21 Jan. 1761.
He successively taught literature, philosophy, dogmatics; then, for eight years, moral theology at the University of Trier, of which he was also rector. The work that rendered him useful and sought-after down to our own day is: *Confessarius rite institutus* (Cologne 1750), repeatedly published and translated into various languages. Recent editions were revised and updated in accordance with the needs and developments of the times, first by Fr. J. Müllendorf (Freiburg in Br. 1906), who had already translated it with great success into German (Regensburg 1890; 3rd ed. 1901), and later by Fr. A. Lehmkuhl (Freiburg in Br. 1905, 2nd ed. 1910; 3rd ed. revised in conformity with the CIC by Fr. J. B. Umberg, 1919). Reuter also published: *Theologia moralis quadripartita* (4 vols., Cologne 1750, with subsequent editions). In both works he shows himself to be a serious author, moderate in doctrine, profound and methodical.
