REUTER, JOHANN. - Jesuit, moral theologian, b. at Lussemburgo on 13 Oct. 1680, d. at Treviri on 21 Jan. 1761.
He taught successively literature, philosophy, and dogmatic theology; then, for 8 years, moral theology at the University of Treviri, of which he was also rector. The work that made him useful and sought after down to our own day is: Confessarius rite institutus (Colonia 1750), repeatedly published and translated into various languages. The recent editions were revised and brought up to date in accordance with the needs and developments of the times, first by Fr. J. Müllendorf (Friburgo in Br. 1906), who had already translated it into German with great success (Ratisbona 1890; 3rd ed. 1901), then by Fr. A. Lehmkuhl (Friburgo in Br. 1905, 2nd ed. there 1910; 3rd ed. prepared in accordance with the CIC by Fr. J. B. Umberg, there 1919). R. also published: Theologia moralis quadrifuritas (4 vols., Colonia 1750, with subsequent eds.). In both works he shows himself to be a serious author, moderate in doctrine, profound and orderly.
