APOLOGETIC REVIEW. - A monthly periodical founded in Paris in 1905 by the Sulpician JEAN GUIBERT, director of the Seminary of the Catholic Institute of the city, to offer especially to the clergy and scholars the means to refute with precision and vigour the difficulties raised by opponents.
The original title was: Revue pratique d'apologétique, which better indicated its type; after the First World War it took the more universal title of Revue d'apologétique, because, without ceasing to be practical, it wished to concern itself less with immediate utility and more with general formation. However, in 1939, under the title of Nouvelle revue apologétique, it resumed in part the original type, noting that the directors of pastoral works and young priests have more need of short, precise, clear articles on the great present religious questions than of longer articles and more specialized studies. The periodical ceased with the Second World War.
