RIGHETTI, IGINO. - Promoter, founder and first president (1933) of the Movimento laureati di Azione Cattolica (v.), b. at Riccione on 3 March 1904, d. at Rome on 17 March 1939.
He was one of the most valiant representatives of the renewed activity of the Catholic laity in the period that saw the affirmation of Fascism in Italy and the regime's opposition to Catholic youth organizations. As regent of the FUCI (v.) in 1925, at a moment of grave difficulty for the Federation after the Congress of Bologna, and then as president, he not only gave broad impetus to the activity of the FUCI but imposed upon it, through fruitful personal action, that character which has since distinguished the FUCI itself for its cultural and formative commitment. Among his works, besides the Movimento laureati, mention should be made of the organization of the Pasqua universitaria, the Convegni dei laureati, which for a certain period took the place of the settimane sociali of Italian Catholics, the Settimane di cultura religiosa at Camaldoli, and the publishing house Studium; among his ideas, the affirmation of the necessity and the promotion of qualified and demanding cultural activities on the part of A. C. These ideas are amply illustrated in his writings, which enrich the official organ of the FUCI, Azione fucina, founded by him in 1928, and the review Studium (v.), which he raised to an authoritative voice of Catholic culture.
