RIO DE ORO. – Also called Spanish Sahara, in southern Morocco, with an area of 2,500 sq. km and 35,000 inhabitants.
The Spanish garrison and the penal colony are ecclesiastically dependent on the jurisdiction of the Spanish military Ordinary. Ecclesiastical jurisdiction was assigned to the bishop of the Canaries, who periodically sends a priest there for religious assistance. It is therefore not possible to speak of a true mission.
