RÍOS Y ALARCÓN, Bartolomé de los. - Augustinian theologian, b. in Madrid ca. 1580, d. there on 4 May 1652. He entered the Order in 1597 and studied theology at the University of Alcalá. Ordained a priest, he was given charge of the young Augustinians of the Colegio Complutense; from 1622 to 1647 he resided in Belgium, as court preacher and chaplain of the Spanish army, holding important offices in his Order; noteworthy was his fervent Marian apostolate, carried out under the form of slavery, later spread by St. L. M. Grignion de Montfort.
He wrote: De hierarchia Mariana (Antwerp 1641), a true Marian theological summa; Vitta coccinea sive commentarius super Evangelia Passionis et Resurrectionis Christi (ibid. 1646); Horizon Marianus sive de excellentia et virtutibus B. M. V. (ibid. 1647); Christus Dominus in cathedra crucis docens et patiens (Brussels 1654), and other works.
