RIOS y ALARCON, BARTOLOMÉ de los. – Augustinian theologian, born in Madrid around 1580, died there on 4 May 1652. He entered the Order in 1597 and studied theology at the University of Alcalá. After being ordained a priest, he was entrusted with the direction of the young Augustinians at the Collegio Complutense; from 1622 to 1647 he resided in Belgium as court preacher and chaplain to the Spanish army, while holding important offices in his Order. Noteworthy was his fervent Marian apostolate, carried out in the form of slavery, later disseminated by s. L. M. Grignion de Montfort.
He wrote: De hierarchia Mariana (Antwerp 1641), a true Marian theological summa; Vitta coccinea sive commentarius super Evangelia Passionis et Resurrectionis Christi (there 1646); Horizon Marianus sive de excellentia et virtutibus B. M. V. (there 1647); Christus Dominus in cathedra crucis docens et patiens (Brussels 1654), and other works.
