RIOS y ALARCON, BARTOLOMÉ de los. - Augustinian theologian, born in Madrid c. 1580, died there on 4 May 1652. He entered the Order in 1597 and studied theology at the University of Alcalá. After ordination he directed the young Augustinians at the Complutense College; from 1622 to 1647 he resided in the Low Countries as court preacher and chaplain to the Spanish army, discharging important offices in his Order. Notable was his fervent Marian apostolate, conducted in the form of slavery, later propagated by St Louis Marie Grignion de Montfort.
He wrote: *De hierarchia Mariana* (Antwerp 1641), a true theological sum on Mary; *Vittà coccinea sive commentarius super Evangelia Passionis et Resurrectionis Christi* (ibid. 1646); *Horizon Marianus sive de excellentia et virtutibus B. M. V.* (ibid. 1647); *Christus Dominus in cathedra crucis docens et patiens* (Brussels 1654), and other works.
