INTERNATIONAL REVIEW OF SOCIAL AND AUXILIARY SCIENCES
Founded in Rome by Prof. G. Toniolo (v.) through the patronage of Leo XIII, as a preparation, on the rigorous level of scientific investigation, for the renewal of society in a Christian sense.
Toniolo was not new to this project: a program for a journal under the title *L'avvenire della civiltà. Periodico di scienze sociali ed affini* (Rome 1891) is preserved from him, which was intended to be published in Rome as the organ of the Catholic Union for Social Sciences under the care of the Circolo dell'Immacolata. Material and personal difficulties prevented the success of the initiative in 1891, but the *R. i. di s. s. ed a.* of 1895 took up its program. Toniolo first supported the journal through the Catholic Union for Social Studies, then through the General Scientific Society among Catholics in Italy, and finally through the International Association for the Advancement of Science among Catholics, which represented successive attempts to create the general staff for the social reconquest of society. Although these attempts failed as premature, the periodical nevertheless had an honorable history and continues to this day under the care of the Catholic University of Milan, to which Pius XI entrusted it in 1931. Co-director with Toniolo was Monsignor Salvatore Talamo, who, after Toniolo's death in 1917, ensured its direction alone. The new Milanese series was subsequently directed by Professors Albino Uggé, Amintore Fanfani, and Francesco Vito.
