INTERNATIONAL REVIEW OF SOCIAL SCIENCES AND AUXILIARY SCIENCES. - Founded in Rome by Prof. G. Toniolo (v.) through the patronage of Leo XIII, as a preparation, on the rigorous plane of scientific investigation, for the renewal of society in a Christian sense.

Toniolo was not new to such a project: there survives from him a program for a journal entitled L'avvenire della civiltà. Periodico di scienze sociali ed affini (Rome 1891), which was likewise to appear in Rome, as the organ of the Unione cattolica per le scienze sociali, under the care of the Circolo dell'Immacolata. Material and personal difficulties prevented the success of the initiative in 1891, but its program was taken up by the R. i. di s. s. ed a. of 1893. Toniolo first attached the journal to the Unione cattolica per gli studi sociali, then to the Società scientifica generale fra i cattolici d'Italia, and finally to the Associazione internazionale per il progresso della scienza fra i cattolici, which represent the successive attempts to create the general staff of the social reconquest of society. Although these failed because they were premature, the periodical nevertheless had an honorable history and continues to this day under the care of the Catholic University of Milan, to which Pius XI entrusted it in 1931. Co-director with Toniolo was Mons. Salvatore Talamo, who, after Toniolo's death in 1917, ensured its direction on his own. The new Milanese series was subsequently directed by Profs. Albino Uggé, Amintore Fanfani and Francesco Vito.
