TALAMO, SALVATORE. - Neo-Thomist philosopher, b. in Naples on 6 Sept. 1854, d. in Rome on 21 Feb. 1932.

A disciple of Sanseverino (v.) and of Signoriello (v.), he soon made his name with the substantial volume L'aristotelismo nella scolastica (Naples 1873) and with notable articles in the journal La scienza e la fede. Summoned by Leo XIII to the chair of philosophy of law at the Apollinare (1879), he was appointed by the same Pontiff secretary of the Roman Academy of St. Thomas (1880): an office he held with honor for more than half a century. For 33 years he was director and assiduous contributor of the Riv. internaz. di studi sociali (founded with Toniolo in 1893).

Particularly valuable are the two monographs: Le origini del cristianesimo e il pensiero stoico (Rome 1892) and Il concetto della schiavitù da Aristotele ai Dottori scolastici (ibid. 1908), which were prepared and followed by numerous articles and philosophical essays. A scholar of vast culture, sensitive to the problems posed by modern philosophical currents, he was particularly attentive to historical investigations in order to discover the genesis and the development of doctrines and errors (v., for example, the three discourses on Il rinnovamento del pensiero tomistico e la scienza moderna [Rome 1927]).
