RONCAGLIA, COSTANTINO. - Moral theologian, born at Lucca on 5 Nov. 1677, died there on 24 March 1737.
He entered the Congregation of Clerics Regular of the Mother of God at a very young age; he held many offices there, eventually becoming vicar general.
Among his important works is the Universa theologia moralis (2 folio vols., Lucca 1730, repeatedly published and revised down to the last ed., 10 vols., there 1833-35). S. Alfonso considered it a classical treatise as a whole and, given the times, commendable for its mitigated probabilism. At Lucca, in 1734, R. also published the Historia ecclesiastica Veteris Novique Testamenti by N. Alessandro, already condemned for its Gallican tendencies, but which R., through lengthy and learned annotations, corrected, giving it wide renown in its new form.
