RONCAGLIA, COSTANTINO. - Moral theologian, b. at Lucca on 5 Nov. 1677, d. there on 24 March 1737.

He entered the Congregation of the Regular Clerics of the Mother of God at a very young age; he held many offices in it until he finally became vicar general.

Important among his works is the Universa theologia moralis (2 vols. in folio, Lucca 1730, reprinted several times and revised down to the last edition, 10 vols., ibid. 1833-35). St. Alphonsus regarded it as a classic treatise as a whole and, given the times, commendable for its mitigated probabilism. At Lucca, in 1734, R. also published the Historia ecclesiastica Veteris Novique Testamenti of N. Alexander, already condemned for its Gallican tendencies, but which R., with long and learned annotations, corrected, giving it under its new form wide renown. (ibid. 1710); in other editions the title is replaced by Le moderne conversazioni volgarmente dette dei cicisbei (ibid. 1711), which more clearly indicates its content (and indeed the work is very caustic).
