Bishop of Transylvania (1815), Archbishop of Strigonia and Primate (1819), he was created cardinal in 1828. As early as 1820 he had decided to transfer the metropolitan see of Strigonia back to its ancient site, which since 1543 had been at Trnava in the territory of Strigonia. To this end, he undertook the great construction of the new cathedral dedicated to the Virgin and to St. Adalbert on the promontory of Strigonia, replacing the one destroyed by the Turks. In 1822 he held the national synod in Bratislava. Among other things, he was the author of notable sermons in the Slovak language, later published in a volume.
