RUDNAY, ALEXANDER. – Cardinal Primate of Hungary, born in Svätý Križn. Váhom (Slovakia) on 4 October 1760, died in Strigonia on 13 September 1831.
Bishop of Transylvania (1815), Archbishop of Strigonia and Primate (1819), he became a cardinal in 1828. As early as 1820, he had decided to transfer the metropolitan see of Strigonia once again to its ancient seat; since 1543 it had been in Trnava, in the hinterland of Strigonia. To this end, he undertook the great construction of the new Cathedral dedicated to the Virgin and to St Adalbert on the promontory of Strigonia, in place of the one destroyed by the Turks. In 1822 he held the National Synod in Bratislava. Among other things, he was the author of valuable sermons in the Slovak language, later published in book form.
