Rudnay, Alexander

RUDNAY, ALEXANDER. - Cardinal primate of Hungary, b. at Svätý Križ n. Váhom (Slovakia) on 4 Oct. 1760, d. at Esztergom on 13 Sept. 1831.

Bishop of Transylvania (1815), archbishop of Esztergom and primate (1819), he became a cardinal in 1828. From as early as 1820 he had decided to transfer back to its ancient seat the metropolitan see of Esztergom, which since 1543 had been at Trnava in the hinterland of Esztergom. To this end he undertook the great construction of the new Cathedral dedicated to the Virgin and to St. Adalbert on the promontory of Esztergom, in place of the one destroyed by the Turks. In 1822 he held the national Synod in Bratislava. He was, among other things, the author of fine sermons in the Slovak language, later published in a volume.
