RUDINI, ANTONIO STARABBA, marchese di. - Statesman, b. in Palermo on 16 March 1839, d. in Rome as a deputy, he led the right. In 1891 (first fall of Crispi) he became president of the Council and returned to that office in 1896, after Adwa.

He was a rigid restorer of the finances ("ministry of the miserliness") and an anti-colonialist ("policy of the foot at home"); in ecclesiastical policy he was a follower of Tanucci as an assertor of state supremacy. The political scandals and the social agitations culminating in the events of May 1898, which he was unable to confront with energy and discernment (in the violent repressions the nascent Catholic social organizations were involved in one and the same sweep along with the associations of socialism, later provoking the pontifical epistle Spesse volte of 5 Sept. 1898), forced him to resign and to withdraw from political life. At his death he did not want the Sacraments, but the Crucifix.
