RIVET, LOUIS. — Canonist, born in Lione on 3 May 1871, died at Neuville-St-Vaast on 9 May 1915.
Compelled by family circumstances to pursue a military career, he studied at St-Cyr and became an officer in the chasseurs (1891), but shortly thereafter (1893) entered the Society of Jesus. Ordained a priest in 1904, he was professor of moral theology and canon law at Hastings, and subsequently at the Gregorian University in Rome. He was also a consultor to the S. Congr. of Religious. When war broke out, in 1914 he resumed his rank as an officer. Appointed a lieutenant in the Foreign Legion, he carried out an intense apostolate there and died heroically while advancing at the head of his troops.
