RIVET, LOUIS. - Canonist, b. in Lyon on 3 May 1871, d. at Neuville-St-Vaast on 9 May 1915.

Directed by family necessity toward a military career, he studied at St-Cyr and became an officer of the chasseurs (1891), but shortly afterward (1893) he entered the Society of Jesus. Ordained a priest in 1904, he was professor of moral theology and canon law at Hastings, then at the Gregorian University in Rome. He was also a consultor of the Sacred Congregation of Religious. When the war broke out, in 1914 he resumed his officer's rank. Appointed lieutenant in the Foreign Legion, he carried on an intense apostolate there and died heroically while advancing at the head of his troops.
