RIVET, LOUIS. - Canonist, born in Lyon on 3 May 1871, died at Neuville-St-Vaast on 9 May 1915.
Driven by family necessity to a military career, he studied at St-Cyr and became an officer in the chasseurs (1891), but shortly afterwards (1893) he entered the Society of Jesus. Ordained a priest in 1904, he taught moral theology and canon law at Hastings, and later at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. He also served as a consultor to the Sacred Congregation of Religious. With the outbreak of war in 1914, he resumed his military rank. Appointed a lieutenant in the Foreign Legion, he carried out intense apostolic work and died heroically while leading his troops in an advance.
