SAN CARLO (SAN CARLOS) DE ANCUD, DIOCESE of. — City and diocese in the Republic of Chile (South America).
The diocese has 99,430 Catholics out of a population of 101,400 inhabitants, scattered across a territory of 18,074 sq. km. and distributed among 22 parishes served by 25 diocesan priests and 6 religious priests; it has one seminary, 2 male and 3 female religious communities (Ann. Pont. 1952, p. 350). The diocese was erected by Gregory XVI with the bull Ubi primum of 27 May 1840, by division from that of the Most Holy Conception, of which it has been a suffragan since 1939.
