SCHWETZ, Johann Baptist. – Theologian, born at Bosan in Moravia in 1803, died at Vienna in 1890.
He taught dogmatic theology at Olmütz and at the University of Vienna. In 1863 he was appointed court chaplain and later provost of the Chapter of St Stephen. He wrote: *Theologia dogmatica catholica* (2 vols., Vienna 1861; repeatedly revised and expanded), a manual imposed in all theological schools of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, which, while remaining distant from Josephinism and Güntherism, exercised a beneficial influence. Called to Rome in the period preceding the Vatican Council, he prepared lucid outlines on the errors of Günther, now edited and commented upon by L. Orbàn, *Theologia güntheriana et Conc. Vaticanum iuxta vota inedita consultoris J. B. S.* (2 vols., Rome 1942 and 1949).
