SCHWETZ, JOHANN BAPTIST. – Theologian, born in Bosan in Moravia in 1803, died in Vienna in 1890.
He taught dogmatic theology at Olmütz and at the University of Vienna. In 1863 he was appointed court parish priest and subsequently provost of the Chapter of S. Stefano. He wrote: Theologia dogmatica catholica (2 vols., Vienna 1861; reprinted and expanded several times), a manual prescribed in all the theological schools of the Austro-Hungarian Empire which, by keeping its distance from Josephinism and Güntherism, exerted a beneficial influence. Summoned to Rome in the period preceding the First Vatican Council, he prepared lucid outlines on Günther’s errors, now edited and commented on by L. Orbán, Theologia güntheriana et Conc. Vaticanum iuxta vota inedita consultoris J. B. S. (2 vols., Rome 1942 and 1949).
