Schynse, August Wilhelm

SCHYNSE, AUGUST WILHELM. - Missionary, b. 21 June 1857 at Wallhausen near Kreuznach, priest in 1880, he was the first German to enter the White Fathers in 1882; missionary in the Congo from 1885 to 1887, and from 1887 onward in German East Africa.

He accompanied Stanley on his return to the eastern coast and in 1890 Emin Pasha on his expedition into the interior of Africa; d. 18 Nov. 1891 at Bukumbi. His travel journals, published by Karl Hespers, were received with great acclaim in Germany: Zwei Jahre am Kongo (Cologne 1889); Mit Stanley und Emin Pascha durch Deutsch-Ostafrika (ibid. 1890); P. Schynses letzte Reise (ibid. 1892).
