SCHYNSE, August Wilhelm. — Missionary, born on 21 June 1857 at Wallhausen near Kreuznach, ordained priest in 1880, he was the first German to join the White Fathers in 1882; missionary in the Congo from 1885 to 1887, and from 1887 onwards in German East Africa.
He accompanied Stanley on his return to the east coast and in 1890 Emin Pasha on his expedition into the interior of Africa. He died on 18 November 1891 at Bukumbi. His travel journals, published by Carlo Hesper, were received with great acclaim in Germany: *Zwei Jahre am Kongo* (Cologne 1889); *Mit Stanley und Emin Pascha durch Deutsch-Ostafrika* (ibid. 1890); *P. Schynses letzte Reise* (ibid. 1892).
