SEEBER, JOSEF. - Tyrolean poet, b. at Brunico in 1856, d. at Enns (Austria) in 1919. Ordained priest in 1878, he was professor at the minor seminary “Vinzentinum” of Bressanone. Later he was professor of religion at the military academy of Wiener-Neustadt.
Noteworthy are his epic poems: Der ewige Juden (1894, 16th ed. 1920), Christus (3rd ed. 1914), St. Elisabeth von Thüringen (1883, 4th ed. 1919); the tragedy Judas (1887). Famous are his songs to the Sacred Heart: Auf zum Schwur Tiroler Land, and to the Immaculate Conception: Aus des Elendes tjetsten Grund, set to music by the composer of Bressanone, Canon Ignazio Mitterer.
