SEEBER, JOSEF. – Tyrolean poet, born in Brunico in 1856, died in Enns (Austria) in 1919. Ordained a priest in 1878, he was a professor at the « Vinzentinum » minor seminary in Bressanone. Later he was professor of religion at the military academy of Wiener-Neustadt.
His epic poems are noteworthy: Der ewige Jude (1894, 16th ed. 1920), Christus (3rd ed. 1914), St. Elisabeth von Thüringen (1883, 4th ed. 1919); and the tragedy Judas (1887). His songs to the Sacred Heart, Auf zum Schwur Tiroler Land, and to the Immaculate Conception, Aus des Elends tiefstem Grund, are famous; they were set to music by the Bressanone composer, canon Ignazio Mitterer. S. also revised Lindemann’s History of German Literature for its 6th edition.
