SEEBÖCK, PHILIBERT. - Prolific Franciscan writer on asceticism, b. at Innsbruck in 1839, d. at Schwaz (Tyrol) in 1914.
He was a gymnasium professor at Hall (Tyrol) from 1863 to 1881, and a lecturer in Church history and the New Testament in various convents of Tyrol. In 1891-92 he was in Rome at the College of St. Anthony. He went as visitor to Transylvania in 1894.
He was the author of 192 religious works, of which 9 were on preaching, 95 on prayer and edification, and 88 writings on various subjects. Among them, Der Edelstein der gottgeweihten Jungfräulichkeit enjoyed very wide circulation (51st ed. in 1920); Kleine illustrierte Heiligenlegende (11th ed. in 1907), of which an Italian translation also exists. He translated the sermons of Fr. Agostino da Montefeltro (1889-90) and edited the edition of Peter Aureoli: Compendium S. Scripturae (Quaracchi 1896).
