SEEBÖCK, PHILIBERT. — Prolific Franciscan writer on asceticism, born in Innsbruck in 1839, died in Schwaz (Tyrol) in 1914.
He was a grammar-school teacher in Hall (Tyrol) from 1863 to 1881, and a lecturer in Church history and the New Testament in various convents of Tyrol. In 1891–92 he was in Rome at the Collegio S. Antonio. He went as a visitor to Transylvania in 1894.
He was the author of 192 religious works, 9 of them on preaching, 95 on prayer and edification, and 88 writings on various subjects. Among these, Der Edelstein der gottgeweihten Jungfräulichkeit (51st ed. in 1920) and Kleine illustrierte Heiligenlegende (11th ed. in 1907), of which there is also an Italian translation, achieved very wide circulation. He translated the sermons of Fr. Agostino da Montefeltro (1889–90) and edited Pietro Aureoli: Compendium S. Scripturae (Quaracchi 1896).
