A pupil of the German College, he served as spiritual director of the major seminary at Bressanone (1879), where he taught dogmatic theology for 26 years (1882-1908). He became rector of the seminary in 1908, and in 1916 vicar general and provost of the cathedral. A devoted scholar of St Augustine and St Thomas Aquinas, he carried out notable scientific work (1918-21).
