SETH (Hebr. Šēth). – Son of Adam, after Cain and Abel, whose name is interpreted by assonance: “God gave me (Jāth, ‘placed’) another son instead of Abel, killed by Cain” (Gen. 4:25). The beginning of religious-spiritual civilization is attributed to him (“Then it was begun to invoke the name of Jahweh”: ibid. 4:26), in contrast to the descendants of Cain, who initiated material civilization (ibid. 4:17–24). At the age of 105 he fathered Enos (ibid. 5:6), among whose descendants Noah would be found.
