Seth

SETH

SETH (Heb. Šēth). - Son of Adam, after Cain and Abel, whose name is interpreted by assonance: "God gave me (Jāth "set") another son instead of Abel, killed by Cain" (Gen. 4:25). To him is traced the beginning of religious-spiritual civilization ("Then men began to call upon the name of Yahweh": ibid. 4:26), in contrast to the line of Cain, which inaugurated material civilization (ibid. 4:17-24). At the age of 105 he begot Enosh (ibid. 5:6), in whose line Noah would be found.
