SETH (Heb. Šeth). — Son of Adam, after Cain and Abel, whose name is interpreted by assonance: “God hath given me (šath ‘hath set’) another son in place of Abel, whom Cain slew” (Gen. 4:25). To him is traced the beginning of religious-spiritual civilization (“Then began men to call upon the name of the Lord”: ibid. 4:26), in contrast to the lineage of Cain, which inaugurated material civilization (ibid. 4:17-24). At the age of 105 he begot Enos (ibid. 5:6), in whose descendants Noah is found.
