SIBUNDOY, APOSTOLIC VICARIATE OF. - By a decree of 8 February 1951 from the Apostolic Vicariate of Caquetá (q.v.) in Colombia, the region called “Intendencia de Caquetá” was detached to form the Apostolic Vicariate of Florencia, and likewise the region known as “Comisaría de Amazonas” was separated to establish the Apostolic Prefecture of Leticia (q.v.). The Apostolic Vicariate of Caquetá was reduced to the single “Comisaría de Putumayo” and took the name S., the residence of the Ordinary.

It now covers an area of about 22,150 sq. km. and has a population of about 28,000 inhabitants. There are 11 Capuchins, 8 quasi-parishes with churches, and 17 chapels.
