Silvacane (Sauvecanne)

SILVACANE (SAUVECANNE). - Ancient Cistercian abbey in the archdiocese of Aix in Provence.

It was founded by Raymond de Baux in 1132-57; it was suppressed by Pope Eugene IV in 1443 and its property was transferred to the metropolitan Chapter of Aix. The abbey church has recently been restored on the exterior; it had three naves, reinforced on the outside by numerous buttresses; above the transept rises a square tower; the main apse is decorated with a 15th-century pointed-arch niche. Today, however, it is reduced to a farmhouse, as is also the adjoining cloister, and the chapter hall has been transformed into a stable.
