SILVA PORTO, DIOCESE OF. – A city and diocese in Angola, a Portuguese possession in West Africa.
It has an area of 625,440 sq. km. with a population of 943,529 inhabitants, of whom 63,536 are Catholic; it comprises 2 parishes served by 48 diocesan priests (Ann. Pont., 1952, p. 380). The diocese was established by Pope Pius XII with the apostolic constitution Solemnibus Conventionibus of 4 Sept. 1940, as a suffragan of Loanda, and the parish church of St. P., dedicated to the martyr St. Lawrence, was elevated to the dignity of a cathedral.
