SISINNIO, POPE. – A Syrian by origin, he succeeded Giovanni VII (d. 18 October 707) on 15 January 708, after almost three months during which the see was vacant.
In order to ensure the safety of the inhabitants of the City against possible incursions by the Lombards or the Saracens, he ordered that the brick kilns be reactivated to fire the bricks needed for repairs to the walls; but his order remained unexecuted because of his ensuing death, which occurred following an attack of gout on 4 February of the same year. He was buried in St Peter’s.
