SOLOVKI. — The name by which the famous Russian monastery, once a "stauro-ghigiale," in the Solovetsky Archipelago (White Sea, north of Arkhangelsk) is commonly known. It was founded in 1429 by the monks German and Savvatij; shortly afterward, the monk Zosima joined them, who, over time, became—along with Savvatij—one of the most celebrated saints of the Russian Church. The monks gradually occupied all the islands and part of the mainland.
