STAUROPEGION OF LVIV. - Brotherhood of Galician, Moldavian and Greek merchants with its seat in Lviv, confirmed in 1596 by the Antiochene patriarch Joachim and in 1587 by the Byzantine patriarch Jeremiah II, who placed it under his immediate dependence, whence the name of S.

The purpose of the S. was, among other things, the supervision of right doctrine and of the maintenance of the legitimate ecclesiastical usages in Lviv, which gave rise to disputes with the local bishops, from whose jurisdiction the S. was exempt. It possessed a printing house and a school and later a monastery and a hospital. Throughout the whole 17th century the S. opposed the Union of Brest-Litovsk (1596), which it accepted only in 1709. Pope Clement XI granted the S. exemption. Even in later times the S. showed itself to be of a conservative and pro-Russian spirit. The metropolitan Andrew Szeptyckij took away from the S. the right to appoint its chaplains by itself.
