«SOMMO REFECTIS ARTUBUS». — Hymn of Matins on Monday, of unknown authorship; it is found in manuscripts from the 9th century (G. M. Dreves, Anal. hymn., III, Leipzig 1888, p. 27 ff.).
When night has passed, to the Lord goes the first loosening of the tongue, the first beat of the heart at the dawning day, and as darkness gives way to light, so too may sin, which is the darkness of the soul, vanish with the appearance of God’s grace.
