SOCIETY OF MARY REPARATRIX. - Religious institute founded in Paris in 1855 by the servant of God Mary of Jesus (Émilie d'Oultremont) under the guidance of the Jesuit Father Adolphe Petit.

On June 24, 1864, the decree of praise was granted, and on March 10, 1873, that of approval of the Institute and of the Constitutions. The purpose of the Society is reparation: to make reparation in souls and for the souls who offend the Lord. To the contemplative life the religious join the active life, and in their chapels the Most Blessed Sacrament is exposed during the day. In mission lands they also have elementary schools, orphanages, dispensaries, etc. At Estebbe (Uganda) they devote themselves to the formation of native sisters and have established the Congregation of the African Sisters of Mary Reparatrix, canonically erected in 1948. At present the Society is present in many countries of Europe, Asia, Africa and America, with over 2,500 sisters in 80 houses.
