SOSTHENES (Σοσθένης, Sosthenes). - In the New Testament this name occurs twice; but it is uncertain whether it is a question of the same person or of a simple homonymy. St. Paul, according to a custom dear to him, associates S. with himself in addressing the first letter to the Corinthians (1:1); he qualifies him with only the title of "brother," as he does for Timothy elsewhere (II Cor. 1:1; Col. 1:1).
In Acts 18:17 there is mention of a S. who, after the useless attempt to have the Apostle condemned by the proconsul Gallio, is mocked and beaten by a group of pagans. Luke limits himself to reporting the anecdote and to noting Gallio's ostentatious indifference to the rather comic scene. S. was the ruler of the synagogue of the numerous Jewish colony. If the identification is admitted, one must think that from accuser of St. Paul S. became his faithful and dear collaborator after his conversion to Christianity.
