SUBSTITUTE. - A substitute (substitutus, subrogatus, vicarius) is one who takes the place of another.

In the offices of the Roman Curia there are officials so designated, with a stable assignment subordinate to the major prelates who head the various dicasteries. In the past they were more numerous, with higher or lower assignments; today, besides the substitute of the Secretariat of State for ordinary affairs, who is also secretary of the Cipher, in the Curia there are the substitutes of the assessor of the S. Congregation Consistorial, of the assessor of the S. Congregation for the Eastern Church, and of the secretary of the S. Congregation of Rites. The Supreme S. Congregation of the Holy Office has among its officials six substitute notaries. The S. Apostolic Penitentiary has a substitute in its tribunal section and another substitute among the officials of its indulgences section. The tribunal of the S. Roman Rota has a substitute of the defender of the bond, and finally the Rev. Apostolic Chamber has two notaries of the Chamber, one of whom is the substitute of the other in the office of secretary and chancellor.
